Agriculture is very important in salentine economy because of grape-vine and because of the production of a high quality olive oil. The wine production has had in the latest twenty years a big commercial success, since the salentine wine, once used to increase the gradation of the northern wines, has become to have a growing notoriety as a full-bodied but refined table wine. The most famous are: Primitivo di Manduria, Negroamaro and Rosato del Salento. Among the other agricultural productions there is also that of the almond tree, tomatoes in the area of Taranto and the artichokes near Brindisi. Because of the climate, in Salento don’t flourish some typical cultures of Apulia as cherry trees. In the latest years, the population employed in the primary sector lowered in all the area.
